It’s truly been a hectic day. I bet many of you would say the same thing today. And as I sit and finally process some of the stories and articles I’ve read, my son pointed out that today is Veteran’s Day (in the U.S.). I’ve have the honor and pleasure to work for and alongside many great military and civilian men and women when I worked in Washington, D.C. Today we remember, honor, and thank the men and women who faithfully protect and serve our country.
But who are these men and women?
I highly encourage you to read Mic’s Identities article, Powerful Photos Reveal the Diversity of the Humans Beneath the Uniform.
The images of artist/photographer Devin Mitchell capture another perspective of these heroic men and women. There is a beauty and rawness to these images as you view two very different sides of these individuals or families. The image above is quite telling, especially when you read the caption about this military family. Both parents, Jennifer and Shamar Hope, have been “deployed simultaneously three times.” How that has affected their daughter Rachel speaks immeasurably in Mitchell’s image.
You can see more of Devin Micthell’s work on his Instagram account, soldierproject. I’m following, so should you.
Happy Veteran’s Day.
To the men and women in the Armed Services, thank you for sharing a part of you with the rest of us and the world.
From my hometown to yours,
